It should be of no surprise to anyone when we say that your diet is extremely important to your overall health and wellbeing—including the health of your eyes. Though managing a healthy diet can seem difficult at times, the good news is that there are various types of food that can help support eye health.

Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines, are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats can help prevent dry eyes, which can cause discomfort, irritation, and blurred vision. Omega-3s can also reduce the risk of developing AMD.

The retina contains a high concentration of omega-3s

, particularly DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). This fatty acid is crucial for the retina's normal function, as it helps maintain the integrity of the cell membranes. Additionally, omega-3s may also help reduce inflammation in the eyes, which can contribute to various eye diseases.

Eggs are a good source of nutrients that can support eye health, including lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamins A and E, and zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs can help protect the eyes from harmful blue light and UV rays. Vitamin A is crucial for maintaining good vision, particularly in low light conditions. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can help protect the eyes from free radical damage, while

           Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds such as almonds, walnuts, and chia seeds are excellent sources of vitamin E, which can help protect the eyes from free radical damage. Additionally, these foods also contain omega-3s, which, as previously discussed, can help prevent dry eyes and reduce the risk of AMD.

What’s more is that nuts and seeds also contain the zinc that we know to be so important to eye health. Zinc helps transport vitamin A from the liver to the retina, where it is converted into a pigment called rhodopsin, which is crucial for night vision.

When it comes to vitamin C, there is of course nothing better than citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, and lemons. Though widely known for supporting the immune system, vitamin C is an antioxidant that can also help protect the eyes from free radical damage. Plus, Vitamin C can help maintain the health of blood vessels in the eyes, which is crucial for maintaining good vision.

There’s a bit of magical language that oversells the effects of carrots on one’s vision. We’re sad to say that they will not, in fact, allow you to see in the dark. But that’s not to say that they aren’t great for your eyes!

Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which is a type of vitamin A. Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the eyes from free radical damage. It can also help prevent the development of cataracts. The lens in the eye contains high levels of vitamin A, and beta-carotene can help maintain the lens's health.

The Spring Doesn't Just Bring Beautiful Weather

Is there anything worse than allergy season? You’ve just survived another winter and the doldrums that accompany it, and just as soon as the weather gets nice enough to enjoy, mother nature deploys clouds of pollen and your immune system goes haywire.

Allergy season is miserable, especially for those who suffer from eye allergies. Eye allergies, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, can cause symptoms such as itching, redness, and tearing, which can be frustrating and uncomfortable.

We’ve got your back. While springtime might have your eyes redder than a clown’s nose, there are fortunately several steps that you can take to mitigate pollen’s assault. Let’s take a look at seven tips from the pros for taking care of your eyes during allergy season.

           1. Avoid allergens

As obvious as it might sound, the best way to prevent eye allergies is to avoid allergens that trigger them. Pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander are common allergens that can cause eye allergies. People with allergies should try to avoid these allergens as much as possible by staying indoors when pollen counts are high, using air filters and purifiers, and keeping pets out of the bedroom. We recommend using

to stay informed about days when the outdoors is a no-go.

           2. Keep windows closed

Keeping windows closed can help prevent allergens from entering the home and triggering eye allergies. When the air outdoors is drowning in pollen, it’s important to make sure your home is as allergen-free as possible to give your eyes a break. If you need fresh air, consider using an air conditioner or a fan to circulate air. If needed, you can also use a humidifier to keep the air moist, as dry air can worsen symptoms of eye allergies.

Over-the-counter eye drops can help relieve symptoms of eye allergies, such as itching, redness, and tearing. There are several types of eye drops available, including antihistamine drops, decongestant drops, and lubricating drops. That being said, using them too much can be really bad for your eyes, and might even

Cleansing eyelids can help remove allergens and other irritants that can cause eye allergies. People can use a mild soap and water or a special eyelid cleanser to clean their eyelids. They should gently rub their eyelids with a clean washcloth or cotton swab and rinse with water.

How to Keep Your Glasses from Fogging Up in the Cold

You Don't Have to Put Up With the Fog

Ask any glasses wearer about the inconvenience of fogged-up lenses in the winter, and they'll rattle off a laundry list of complaints, ranging from the minor inconveniences of walking into a warm cafe on a cold day to the more dangerous hazards of fogged-out glasses while driving.

Glasses can easily fog up in the winter due to the temperature difference between the warm air inside and the cold air outside. This can be particularly annoying for people who rely on glasses for their daily activities. It’s a headache, to be sure; however, there are several ways to prevent or reduce fogging during the long winter months.

Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can overcome this seasonal grievance and live a fog-free life.

Adjust the fit of your glasses

If your glasses are too loose, warm air can escape from the top of the frames and fog up the lenses.

           Properly fitting glasses

should sit comfortably on your nose, with the lenses in front of your eyes and the temples (arms) resting gently on your ears. The top of the frames should follow the brow line, while the bottom of the frames should rest just above your cheeks without touching them. The distance between the lenses should match the distance between your eyes, and the frame should be wide enough to avoid putting pressure on the sides of your head. The nose pads should be adjusted to keep the glasses from sliding down your nose, while the temple tips should rest comfortably behind your ears without being too tight or too loose. A good fit is important not only for avoiding fog, but also for optimal vision and to prevent headaches or other discomforts caused by ill-fitting glasses.

Anti-fogging products for glasses work by creating a thin film on the lenses that prevents moisture from condensing. When warm air meets a cooler surface, such as the lenses of glasses in cold weather, it can cause condensation or fogging. Anti-fogging products create a

Some products also contain a surfactant that helps to lower the surface tension of the water droplets, making them less likely to form into fog.

Another simple DIY solution is to wash your glasses with soap and water, and then let them air-dry or gently wipe them with a soft cloth.

creates a thin layer of soap on the lenses that helps to prevent fogging by reducing the surface tension of the water droplets that would otherwise condense on the glasses. This allows the moisture to spread out evenly over the lenses, preventing it from forming into visible droplets that can impair vision.
Make sure your mask fits right

Nearly all glasses wearers had to figure out this trick for themselves during the early days of the pandemic. When a mask is needed,

           a correctly fitting mask

can prevent glasses from fogging by reducing the amount of warm air that escapes from the top of the mask and comes into contact with the lenses. Your mask should fit snugly around the nose and cheeks to help create a seal that directs warm air downward and away from the glasses. A mask with a nose wire or adjustable nose piece can also help create a better seal and prevent air from escaping around the top of the mask. By directing warm air away from the glasses, a properly fitting mask can help prevent moisture from condensing on the lenses and causing fogging.

           Keep your glasses warm

As simple as it sounds, keeping glasses warm reduces the temperature difference between the lenses and the surrounding air, which can prevent warm, moist air from condensing on the glasses and causing fogging. By keeping the lenses at a similar temperature to the surrounding air, there is less of a temperature difference for the air to condense on the lenses. You can do this by keeping your glasses in a warm place, such as a pocket or inside your jacket when you’re not using them.

10 Symptoms of Eye Disease to Watch Out For

Pay Attention to What Your Eyes are Telling You

Disease of the eyes can affect anyone, young or old. As vision is one of your most valuable assets, it’s essential to stay well informed. Eye disease can often have no visible signs, so it’s important to identify the symptoms and seek medical advice from an optometrist if you experience any of them. Here are ten common symptoms that may indicate a potential eye condition:

           1. Blurred vision

Blurred vision or a sudden change in vision can be a sign of an underlying eye problem. While many people’s vision may worsen naturally, it’s important to see an eye doctor to be certain it isn’t a symptom of eye disease.

           2. Flashes or floaters

These are small spots, specks, lines, or cloud shapes that appear in your vision. Flashes or floaters may be caused by retinal detachment, vitreous detachment, inflammation inside your eyes, or other problems with the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance found inside your eyes.

           3. Painful or red eyes:

Pain in the eyes could be due to an infection such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or keratitis (inflammation of the cornea). If accompanied by redness and swelling, it could also be caused by inflammatory conditions such as uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye).

           4. Dry eyes

This is usually caused by a lack of tears and lubrication in your eyes due to age-related changes in tear production, environmental factors such as air conditioning or long hours staring at computer screens, autoimmune conditions, and certain medications such as antihistamines and oral contraceptives. Common signs include a burning sensation and sometimes a gritty feeling inside your eyes.

           5. Sudden decrease in visual acuity

This can occur suddenly with no warning signs due to conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD),

           diabetic retinopathy

(damage to ocular blood vessels), and glaucoma (increased pressure within the eyes). AMD is more common among people over 50, while diabetic retinopathy affects people who have diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2. Glaucoma is most often seen in adults over 60, but it can affect anyone at any age if left untreated for many years without regular checkups from an optometrist.

           6. Difficulty seeing at night

This is usually caused by cataracts, which form when proteins accumulate on the lens of your eye, causing it to become cloudy and making it harder for patients to distinguish objects at night when there is less light available for their retina to detect them accurately. This symptom usually develops over time but can get worse if left untreated for a long period of time without being monitored regularly by an optometrist.

            7. Light sensitivity

This symptom can be a sign of inflammation in the eye, such as uveitis or allergic conjunctivitis, which causes irritation to light entering the eye, resulting in redness, an itching sensation, and watery discharge from the affected areas. It's important to seek medical attention right away if you experience increased sensitivity to light so that a proper diagnosis and treatment can be given accordingly.

           8. Halos around lights

Halos are bright circles that appear around lights when viewing them at night, which may indicate early-onset

that cause cloudiness on the lenses, making it difficult for patients to see clearly in low-light situations. It's essential that regular visits are made with an optometrist for proper diagnosis and management strategies before cataracts worsen, leading to a possible surgical procedure.

           9. Squinting/eye strain

Squinting is often done unconsciously when our eyes become tired from prolonged periods of intense focus on close objects such as digital devices, books, and newspapers. This may lead to headaches, nausea, dizziness, or blurred vision. However, squinting should not be confused with

Strabismus may indicate difficulty controlling refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness); so seeking help from an optometrist would help determine an appropriate treatment plan based on individual circumstances if required.

           Don't Neglect Your Vision

We live in a busy world, so it’s only natural that some things will fall by the wayside. One thing that is neglected too often is getting a regularly scheduled eye exam. Hey, we get it. These things can be easy to put off until they’ve left your mind completely, especially if you believe you have perfect vision. However, eye disease and vision impairment are serious conditions that are best treated if they are caught as early as possible.

So that being said, how do you know if you should see an eye doctor? In order to help you answer that question, we’ve compiled a list of signs that you should have your eyes examined as soon as possible.

You Can’t Remember the Last Exam

Let’s start off with the basics: If we had a different president the last time you had your eyes examined, you’re probably due for a checkup. If you have hazy memories from your childhood ophthalmologist and that’s it, you’re way overdue.

If you’re struggling to remember the last time you had your eyes checked, there’s no time like the present to schedule an appointment.

           Regularly Scheduled Exams

There are a lot of different factors that go into determining the regularity of your eye exams, but generally speaking, healthy individuals between the ages of 16 to 60 should have their eyes checked

Diabetes can have a significant impact on vision and can lead to a number of eye-related complications, the most common of which is

. This is a condition in which the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, become damaged. It can lead to vision loss and blindness if left untreated.

People with diabetes are also at an increased risk of developing cataracts, glaucoma, and macular edema. Cataracts are clouding of the lens of the eye that can cause blurry vision. Glaucoma is a condition in which the pressure in the eye increases, damaging the optic nerve and leading to vision loss. Diabetic macular edema occurs when the blood vessels in the macula, the central part of the retina, become leaky and cause the macula to swell. This can lead to vision loss.

, you need to schedule an eye exam as soon as possible. Many of these symptoms are easy to write off as a result of stress or tiredness, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

You should always be aware of disturbances in your field of vision. These disturbances might include protracted blurred or double vision, “floaters,” cloudy vision, waviness in straight lines, vision loss, or spots in your field of vision.

           Don't Ignore the Signs

Pain is another common symptom of eye disease. If you are experiencing an unusual sensitivity to light, pain in or around your eyeball, or extreme redness or dryness, take that as a sign that you need a doctor to look at your vision.

You likely know how vision is supposed to feel and appear, so if you are experiencing disruption or pain in your eyes, it’s time to schedule an appointment immediately.

Don’t let your vision go unattended. Most eye diseases can be treated if caught early enough, so make sure to have your eyes checked regularly. We’d of course be more than happy to help, so don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions at all.

It Might Be Time to Move On

So you’ve got these glasses that you’ve had forever. You don’t love them, but you don’t hate them either. You can see alright, but maybe it seems like that myopia might be slowly creeping back into your field of vision. They’re in pretty good shape, but there’s one or two blotches on them that just don’t seem to buff despite your best efforts.

In short, you’re in a strange limbo where you feel like it might be time for a new pair, but you’re just not sure. Luckily we’re here to make it a little easier for you. Here are our top five signs that you need new glasses.

           1. Your eyes hurt

Do you get a headache when you read? Do things look blurry at a distance from which you used to see just fine? Does watching TV give you a headache? If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are that you need to

update your prescription for your glasses

           .

As you age, usually in your 40’s, the lenses inside your eyeballs will become more rigid (even if you already have weak vision). As such, symptoms of eye strain and fatigue become more pronounced and uncomfortable. If you’re having any pain, your body is pretty clearly telling you that your current prescription glasses aren’t going to cut it any more and it’s time for a new set of specs.

           2. You’ve picked up an active hobby

This might not necessarily mean that your current glasses should get pitched, but if you’ve recently picked up a new athletic hobby, such as basketball, tennis, mountain biking, or distance running, it’s going to be in your best interest to purchase some new glasses.

           3. You’re due for a new prescription

It’s interesting that the human brain is able to account for a lot of vision distortions all on its own, but the fact of the matter is that when it comes to glasses, eventually their ticket will come up and it’ll be time to update your prescription.

If you’re between the ages of 18 and 60, you’re probably going to need to

update your glasses every couple of years.

It’s important to get annual eye exams during this time as your eye doctor will be able to provide insight into the health of your vision. If you have certain chronic diseases such as diabetes, these checkups and prescription changes might need to be more frequent.

           4. You’ve scratched your lenses

Isn’t that just the worst when that happens? You’re minding your own business when a stranger accidentally bumps into you and sends your glasses flying. While you might be tempted to just rough it with your scratched lenses, you really should have them replaced as soon as possible.

Scratched lenses can cause a host of issues

such as vision distortions, incorrect focusing, and glare from lights which makes driving at night particularly perilous.

If your glasses are scratched, it’s a clear indication that you need them replaced.

           5. You hate your glasses

Life is too short for wearing a pair of glasses that you’re embarrassed to be seen in. It’s your face, your vision, and your glasses, so you might as well wear a pair that looks great on you.

Why Glasses Don't Have to Interfere With Your Workout

Your Glasses Shouldn't Effect Your Workout

We’ve all been there before: You’re trying to get a sweat in, but you forgot your contact lenses and now your glasses are flopping all around on your nose like a flag in a hurricane. You can’t enjoy your workout because your only options are to risk breaking an expensive prescription or jog blindly down the road and risk breaking way more. It’s a miserable experience that usually ends in cutting your workout short and heading home dejected.

It doesn’t have to be that way though! Whether you’re a hobby cyclist, a marathon runner, a consummate gym rat, or play basketball with your friends on the weekend, glasses don’t have to interfere with your workout routine.

Here are a few tips that will make sure you never have to skip a workout because of precariously placed eyeglasses again.

           Get a glasses strap

No, we don’t mean the shoestring that holds your uncle’s reading spectacles around his neck, we mean a strap specifically designed to keep your glasses where they need to be when you’re working out.

           Neoprene straps

are a great way to be sure that when you’re working out your glasses aren’t going anywhere.

           Get sports glasses

You can get prescription glasses designed for nearly any sport nowadays. Whether you’re a runner, baller, or swimmer, there’s surely a pair of glasses that will work for you. If you’re thinking of a pair of specialized glasses, you should be sure to

choose one with your particular sport in mind

. This is a bigger investment than some of the other items on this list, but having a pair of glasses in your gym bag that are designed for your game is absolutely a worthy investment for even amateur athletes.

           Change up your routine

In the event that you have no recourse other than to use your regular glasses during your gym session, it might make sense to

           alter your workout accordingly

. It would be a shame to miss out on exercise just because you lack the right eyewear, but it’s equally risky to put your expensive prescription glasses in jeopardy.

So instead of hitting the treadmill, get your cardio workout in by using an elliptical machine or a stationary bike. These exercises won’t cause quite as much jostling and your glasses will thank you. If you planned on joining a pickup game of ball, maybe take the day to focus on

           calisthenics

or some other type of exercise that won’t send your glasses flying.

           Get your glasses adjusted

Having the proper prescription to correct your vision is only part of the equation with glasses. Along with style and functionality,

glasses must be sized and adjusted to fit your face just right

. If your glasses are too big, they will almost certainly slip off of your face at inconvenient times. If they are too small, you’ll know because of how uncomfortable they are.

For athletes and those who exercise, having properly fitted glasses is extremely important because it will help them actually stay on your head while you are getting fit. If the arms of the glasses are feeling loose, an optometrist will be happy to tighten them up and get them working right for you.

Glasses can be way more comfortable

If you’re the type who usually exercises in contacts, you’re likely familiar with the uncomfortable dryness that occurs when you’ve been sweating for a while. Peeling your lenses off of your dried eyes is no fun either.

This is an experience that can be almost completely ameliorated by switching to a well-fitting pair of sports glasses during your workout.

If you’re the athletic type and want to know more about the options that are available to you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’ll get you a pair of glasses that are comfortable and let you focus on the grind at hand.

5 Diseases an Eye Exam Can Detect

           Improve Your Health

Regular eye exams should be a part of everyone’s healthcare routine, and not just to protect your vision. While it’s true that checkups from your optometrist can catch the early signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, eye exams are remarkably effective at detecting so much more. Many of these diseases can be life-threatening, so early detection and treatment is vital.

Let’s take a look at five diseases and health conditions that may be detected during your routine eye exam.

           Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the United States. Despite the fact that an estimated 37 million Americans suffer from the condition, as much as

Early detection of diabetes leads to a higher chance of remission and a better chance of successful management of illness, avoiding the more serious complications associated with it.

Eye exams are particularly effective at catching diabetes even before symptoms arise. High blood sugar caused by insulin resistance damages blood vessels in the eyes. Though this damage might not be noticed by an individual, an eye exam will detect this damage and can lead to a successful early diagnosis.

A brain aneurysm occurs when an artery in the brain becomes enlarged by the blood circulating through it. This enlargement puts pressure on the nerves and tissue surrounding it, and if left untreated can lead to stroke.

even before symptoms present themselves. As eye exams peer deep into the tissue inside and surrounding the eye, the procedure can reveal swelling in the optic nerve and increased pressure in the brain, both of which are signs of cerebral aneurysm. As with so many other health conditions and diseases, early detection is essential for successful treatment, and having regular checkups with your ophthalmologist is paramount.

Systemic lupus erythematosus, commonly referred to as lupus or SLE, is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own tissues and organs. Lupus is notoriously difficult to diagnose as it mimics the symptoms of many other illnesses. While there is no known cure for lupus, symptoms can be managed and individuals with the disease are able to live long, healthy lives.

, as it commonly affects vision. Though the exact cause of lupus is unknown, genetics may play a role, so if you have a family history of the disease, frequent eye exams are strongly recommended.

Finding New Frames Doesn't Need to be a Hassle

We’ve all been there before. You’ve got a new prescription or maybe you’re replacing your old pair of glasses and suddenly you are confronted with a wall of frames and you suddenly have to decide what your face is going to look like with your glasses for the next couple of years. It’s daunting and exhausting and the last thing you want is to make the wrong decision.

Don’t you worry, we’re here with you to help you choose a pair of frames that you’re going to love. We’ve compiled a list of five factors that you should consider when picking your new frames that will make the task feel less herculean.

           1. What is your face shape

You’ve probably already read a million articles about

picking frames for your face shape

that have you spending a confounding amount of time trying to figure out if your face is a heart or an oval or a diamond to the point where you might be even more unsure about what type of frames you would look good in than when you started!

The truth is that human faces are incredibly diverse in proportions and size and yours probably doesn’t fit neatly into one of five categories. While these categories (square, oval, diamond, heart, round) can be a useful template, don’t stress it too much, because there’s actually a much simpler rule of thumb: choose frames that contrast the roundness or the angles of your face. If your face is rounder with softer curves, choose a more angular frame to highlight your bone structure. If your face is more angular, choose rounder frames to soften it a bit. If you start from here, your choice instantly becomes less daunting.

           2. Create harmony with your skin tone

Now that you’ve chosen a shape that compliments your face well, you need to find a color that

           suits your skin tone

           .

If your skin has a yellow, bronze, or golden tone to it, you have a warm skin tone that will look best with warm earth tones such as beige, ochre, honey-gold, and lighter tortoiseshell. You should avoid washed out hues such as pastels as it will clash with your skin’s natural luster.

Cool skin tones have undertones of blue or pink and will look better with darker colors such as black, navy blue, and dark tortoiseshell. Avoid warm earth tones.

Keep in mind that skin tone is different from skin color. Skin tone is more how your skin looks in the light than a base color. People with darker skin can have cool skin tones and people with paler skin can have warm skin tones and vice versa.

           3. Consider your lifestyle

You need a set of frames that can keep up with you, so it’s important to

           take your lifestyle into account

. If you spend most of your time working on a computer indoors, then you might want to prioritize lenses and frames that will be comfortable looking at a screen for extended periods of time.

On the other hand, if work takes you outside and has you working with your hands, you’ll probably want something durable that can survive a fall or two.

Likewise, a more hardy frame would probably be better if you play a lot of sports and spend your time in the gym. Heavier, more fashion-minded frames might be better if you spend your free time socializing or at home.

           4. Eyeglasses are not sunglasses!

You might look amazing in a pair of aviator or wayfarer sunglasses, but this does not mean you will look good in eyeglasses with the same frame!

Eyeglasses will proportion your face differently

, so it’s important to take that into account when making your decision.

            5. But what do

            you

Look, you could agonize all day about what kind of eyeglasses will frame your face the best, and skin tones, and face shapes, but at the end of the day, you are the one wearing them, so you should choose something that

           Anxiety is Normal

Going for a trip to the doctor of any type can be a really stressful experience for kids. They have to break from their normal routine, travel to an unfamiliar place, interact with unfamiliar people, and might find what goes on quite unpleasant.

It’s completely normal, but it can put parents in the difficult position of putting their children through something they don’t want to do and might feel great apprehension about. Many parents might feel at a loss for what to do, so we’ve compiled a list of advice for parents whose children are feeling anxious about their eye exam.

           Be Present for the Exam

Visiting the eye doctor puts kids through a lot of unfamiliar experiences, from the setting to the people, to the examination itself. Accordingly, you’re kiddo’s going to appreciate you being emotionally

           present for the exam

. You might think that the appointment is a great time to catch up on emails or have some alone time, but if your child is nervous, it might be best for you to set your phone to silent mode and pour in. Nothing will make them feel more assured than connecting with you - even if you’re talking about things that have nothing to do with the eye exam.

           Schedule Around Your Child’s Needs

It’s important that your child feel as physically comfortable as possible, so

schedule your visit around your child’s “problem time.”

If your kiddo has a particular time of day when they’re accustomed to a nap, it’s best to make sure that they’re well rested. Likewise, you should make sure they’ve had a snack ahead of time. The experience will be a whole lot more pleasant for both of you if they are fed and rested when they are undergoing the exam.

           Communicate Clearly

Much of your kid’s anxiety about the appointment likely has to do with their imagination running wild with dread about what the exam will entail. Therefore, it’s important to

tell your child in simple language exactly what to expect during the exam

. We encourage you to phone ahead of time so that you know what will happen during the exam and you can communicate to your child both what will and will not happen. Don’t exclude things that you think might upset your child as they need to trust that you are giving them the full picture. By letting your child know what to expect, you will ameliorate their anxiety and make them more compliant for their next visit.

            Comfort Them

Young children should never be told to “just suck it up” during a trip to the eye doctor. If they are scared, you should not only be an authoritative presence, you should

           comfort them during their exam

. Maintain a soothing demeanor and physical contact with them so that they know you are with them and that you are a champion for their safety. Remain calm and reassuring as the exam is underway so that your kid feels protected even if they are uncomfortable.

Always Go to the Same Doctor

One of the scariest things for young children is being exposed to strangers who will have to invade their personal space. You should help your child come to understand everything from the office, to the doctor, to the examination room itself as familiar, so it’s important to

always go to the same eye doctor

. Instead of the “eye doctor” or “optometrist” use your doctor’s name, and mention familiar things about the office so that the entire process becomes as familiar as possible.

It’s no fun to see your child experience anxiety, but with these pieces of advice, you should be able to eliminate as much apprehension as possible. By having a comforting, safe experience with the optometrist at a young age, it sets up a healthy trust for the future as they grow. If you have any questions or concerns about the process, please do not hesitate to give us a call. We love helping kids and will do whatever we can to help you make the experience as comfortable as possible!

Is It Time for an Eye Exam?

           Your Vision is a Priority

Let’s start this off by saying that if you can’t remember your last eye exam, it’s time to get one scheduled as soon as possible. For the rest of us though, it can be difficult to know the telltale signs that you should have your eyes checked or the frequency with which you should get a check up.

We’ve compiled a guideline here to help you know when to get that appointment booked so that you won’t find yourself wondering, “Is it time for an eye exam?”

Frequency of Checkups Depends on Your Age

Vision deteriorates with age. There’s no way around that fact, but with regularly scheduled checkups you can ensure you’re getting the most out of your vision for the longest period of time. Accordingly,

the frequency of your checkups will depend on your age

           .

Let’s start with the babies. You should have an eye examination for your infant within their first year. This will allow your doctor to catch any abnormalities and treat them accordingly. We recommend another checkup before they start first grade, and after that they should be fine every couple of years.

For healthy adults, use the following guidelines:

20-39 years old - Every five years

            40-54 years old - Every 2-4 years

            55-64 years old - Every 1-3 years

            65 and up - Every 1-2 years

Keep in mind that this is just a general guideline and depending on your particular situation, you might need to go more or less frequently.

. Try to find out if your family has a history of cataracts, diabetes, or glaucoma. Diabetic retinopathy in particular is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Additionally, African Americans and Mexican Americans are at a higher risk of developing eye disease.

Many vision diseases are treatable if caught early enough, so if you are at particularly high risk, you should aim to have your vision checked more regularly than others.

If you’re in pain, go to the eye doctor

! Frequent headaches, especially after prolonged periods of time looking at a screen can indicate that your eyes are compensating for a vision problem. Likewise, any kind of sharp, stabbing pain in or behind your eyes should not be ignored. This pain means that something is wrong. Your eye could be inflamed due to infection, or it could indicate a more serious issue like glaucoma. In any case, if your eyes hurt you should see a doctor immediately.

Are Contact Lenses for You

           Is Your Apprehension Warranted?

It’s a pretty wonderful thing to live in an age where we have so many options with our vision care. The two most common forms of corrective vision care are, of course, glasses and contact lenses. Nearly all contact lens users have a pair of corrective glasses to use when their contacts are unavailable, but many wearers of glasses may feel apprehensive about the prospect of switching to contacts, asking themselves, “Should I get contact lenses?”

This is of course a question that is going to have a different answer for different people, so let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages that contact lenses present so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not they are right for you.

           Advantages of Contact Lenses

Contacts are virtually invisible to outside observers.

There are a lot of people out there who are perfectly happy with how they look in glasses, but there are many who just aren’t into it. Contact lenses don’t cover your face like glasses do, so they allow you a more natural look to the outside world. It’s a great option for people who are trying to change up their look and style without sacrificing vision correction.

They allow a wider field of vision.

Glasses sit on the front of your face, so they only provide vision correction if your eyes are pointed in the same direction as your head. Contacts, on the other hand, sit directly on top of your eyeballs, so they correct your vision anywhere you move your eyes and correct your peripheral vision as well.

Contacts let you be more active.

We love glasses, but anyone can tell you that trying to go for a jog, or play hoops in glasses is a disaster waiting to happen. Even with fastening bands or prescription sports glasses, you’ll have the unpleasant sensation of having your glasses bounce up and down on the bridge of your nose or become dislodged during exercise. Contacts account for these unpleasant experiences by staying in place and allowing you to run, jump, and skip to your heart’s content.

Contacts let you ditch the glasses.

Ultimately, this benefit is why contacts were invented. Losing the glasses can make you look better, clear up your skin in the t-zone (if that’s a problem for you), and leave your face feeling unencumbered.

           Disadvantages of Contact Lenses

             They Require More Discipline.

With glasses, your daily cleaning routine is fairly simple. Contact lenses are quite the opposite. They must be removed regularly, washed, and sanitized in order to avoid potentially serious health complications such as bacterial infections. Many people choose to circumvent these hygienic routines by using daily contact lenses, which produce their own set of confounding variables in that disposable contacts can be expensive, especially compared to standard reusable contacts and prescription glasses.

Contacts carry the risk of bacterial infection and other complications.

If proper handling and sanitization practices are followed, contacts are perfectly safe to use daily. However, most people aren’t so fastidious. According to the CDC, about 99% of people surveyed reported at least one behavior with their contact lenses that are associated with an elevated risk of injury or infection. This is, of course, not to say that 99% of contact lens wearers experience serious complications, but rather to illustrate the fact that the vast preponderance of people out there are unable to adhere to the aforementioned required discipline.

Not so much a disadvantage of contacts, but maybe a reduced advantage:

Modern glasses are pretty cool. Some people dig how they look in glasses. Durable, stylish, comfortable frames, and ultra-thin, low-glare lenses make glasses of today as much better than their forebearers as today’s contact lenses are. And glasses have always offered better eye protection than contact lenses.

Early contact lenses had a lot more disadvantages than modern, soft, air-permeable contacts. Modern contacts are comparatively a breeze to wear. There are many more advantages available, too, like bifocal and colored contacts.

Ultimately, the decision to wear contact lenses is up to you. They provide great opportunities for people to gain more autonomy over their personal appearance and allow folks who have vision problems to lead healthy, active lives more comfortably with more natural vision. That being said, they present greater health risks than glasses and should be treated with an elevated awareness of cleanliness.

3 Ways to Take Care of Your Glasses

Eyeglasses are a truly stunning invention that provide corrected vision to an estimated 166.5 million American adults.1 We’ve come a long way in design and technology since the invention of eyeglasses in the 13th century in Northern Italy2 and we’ve learned a great deal about the best ways to care for them and ensure that they last as long as possible.

Unfortunately, too few people who use glasses are aware of the best practices for keeping them clean and protected. Let’s take a look at the three best ways to take care of your glasses.

This is why regular cleaning of your glasses is so important. It might be something you find yourself neglecting, but it is recommended that you clean your glasses every morning.

So what’s the right way to clean your glasses? Let’s go step by step:

Wash your hands to remove any dirt, dust, or oils.

Always take your glasses off with both hands as it reduces strain on the hinges and nose pad.

Rinse your glasses in lukewarm water to remove dust.

Don’t use hot water as it can damage the coating on certain lenses.

           Handling

While keeping your glasses clean is important for your health, handling your glasses in the proper fashion is important for your wallet! While a certain amount of wear and tear is normal, mishandling your glasses will cause them to break or not function properly.

As we’ve previously mentioned, it’s important to always take your glasses off using both hands. You might feel dashing pulling your glasses off with one hand and giving someone a meaningful look, but you aren’t going to feel very cool when your nose pads are crooked and the temples are splayed off to the side! As you take off your glasses, be careful to not touch the lenses as it will leave fingerprints and smudge marks that’ll require cleaning.

           Proper Cleaning

You might not want to think about it, but you and everything you come in contact with is positively teeming with bacteria and other microorganisms. This is also true of your glasses where potentially pathogenic bacteria and microorganisms congregate, especially on the nose pads and ear clips.3 The presence of these microbes have the potential to cause eye infections and other deleterious health conditions. Your skin also naturally produces a variety of oils and sheds dead skin cells which provide sustenance for these germs. Yuck!

Add a few drops of eyeglass cleaning solution or a lotion-free, neutral hand soap and gently rub your glasses. Be sure to pay special attention to the nose pads and the temples because as we’ve previously noted that’s where the germs tend to amass.

A lot of sources say to use dish soap, but we’ve found that these cleaners tend to be a bit too acidic and could cause your lenses to degrade. It’ll do in a pinch, but try to avoid it.

Rinse soap off in lukewarm water.

Carefully dry your glasses using a microfiber cloth.

Never dry your glasses with a paper towel or with the corner of your shirt as this can scratch your lenses.

And there you have it! Try to work cleaning your glasses into your morning routine to keep them clean and hygienic.

On that note, don’t push your glasses up to the crown of your head when you aren’t using them. This will also cause the temples to deform. Likewise, make sure that when you set your glasses down, the frames are facing upwards as even the smoothest seeming surfaces can scratch your lenses.4 Better yet, always keep your glasses in a properly fitting hard case whenever you aren’t using them.

Finally, take off your glasses when you don’t need them. Falling asleep in your glasses or playing sports are perhaps the quickest ways to destroy them, so don’t do it!5

Even if you treat your glasses with kitten paws and follow all of the instructions we’ve given, your glasses are going to need a tune up from time to time. Wear on the hinges of the temples and deformation of the nose pads over time are perfectly normal, so don’t fret if they seem a bit wobbly.

Any parent can tell you that communicating with their small children can be equal parts beautiful and baffling.

In one moment they’ll be breathlessly recounting their heartrendingly adorable encounter with a puppy dog on the way home from school and in the next be in the throes of a full-on meltdown because said puppy was brown and not black.

, how do we parse out their actual needs? In the interest of helping parents recognize vision issues in their children, here are five signs that your child might need an eye exam.

Many health conditions such as type 1 diabetes, measles, conjunctivitis, and premature birth can cause vision problems in children. If your child has had any serious illness at a young age, it’s a good idea to get their eyes checked regularly.

Affected academic performance is one of the most common ways that childhood vision problems are discovered. If your child’s teacher has made remarks about their inability to pay attention in class or that they often seem lost during lessons, it could very well be the case that your child is having trouble seeing what’s going on around them

Unfortunately, many children with poor vision do not understand the uniqueness of their situation and feel embarrassed that they’re not able to do what their classmates can and will opt to stay quiet about their difficulties. It’s important to let your child know that there’s nothing wrong with them and that a doctor can help.

Human beings are pretty resilient in our ability to find methods to adapt to our circumstances, and children are no different. If you notice that your child has been squinting to see indoors, tilting their heads while looking at something, or covering one of their eyes with a hand, these are all

Pay attention to your child’s behavior when they are watching TV, reading a book, or playing on a tablet. Though many children will naturally gravitate closer to things they find interesting, if you notice that your child essentially has their nose pressed to the screen in order to see what’s going on, an eye exam is in order.

This brings us back to our initial point about how it can be difficult for parents to understand their children at times. It’s important for parents to know that children often lack the words to properly articulate their feelings and experiences. Where an adult might have no trouble at all explaining that they have blurry patches in their field of vision or that their vision is fuzzy in one eye, but not in the other, many children simply have not learned the necessary vocabulary to express their vision issues. They may not even realize that they have vision problems in the first place and assume that everyone sees the world the same as they do. Listen to them if they complain of

How Diabetes Affects Your Eyes

Diabetes is a serious illness that affects around 37.3 million Americans. It causes a host of serious health conditions and can lead to death if left untreated. One of the possible conditions caused by diabetes is vision problems. Diabetes can increase the risk of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. In fact, diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness for adults ages 20-74.

So how exactly does diabetes affect your vision? At the risk of oversimplifying, sustained blood sugar levels can damage the tiny blood vessels behind the retina (the photosensitive layer of cells at the back of the eye). This causes the blood vessels to swell and leak which impairs vision. These blood vessels may regrow, but they will likely regrow improperly which causes further impairment to vision. Symptoms of the advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy include blurry or distorted vision, dark or empty patches of vision, floating dark shapes, difficulty seeing colors, and eventually blindness.

Diabetic retinopathy is a serious condition, but the good news is that treatments do exist. It can be distressing for folks with diabetes to learn about the potential for diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases, but it’s important to remember that a diabetes diagnosis is not a sentence to blindness. It’s important to follow your physician's directions and monitor your blood sugar levels at all times.

Another important thing to remember is that treatments for diabetic retinopathy are most effective when caught in the early stages of the illness. That’s why people with diabetes should always get regular eye examinations as optometrists can catch early warning signs before any symptoms even present themselves. If you notice any symptoms such as blurry vision or blind spots, you should contact your optometrist and ophthalmologist immediately and schedule an examination. Once again, there are treatments for this condition, but it is essential to catch it as early as possible.

If you have diabetes and have concerns about the health of your vision, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. We know how stressful this condition can be, and we are here to help.

Pros and Cons of Daily Disposable Contacts

Using contact lenses can be daunting when you’re used to glasses or haven’t needed any corrective lenses until now. But contacts are a safe and highly useful tool in maintaining healthy vision, and there are options to best fit your lifestyle.

The first and foremost thing to consider whether to use daily disposable lenses or extended use lenses is your prescription. Many prescriptions can be matched with daily lenses; however there are exceptions that can only be found in extended-use lenses.

If you’re new to wearing contacts, or are finding you don’t need to wear yours consistently, daily disposable lenses can provide a great learning curve as well as little-to-no maintenance. Once you are done with them, there’s no case and cleaning solution to keep track of!

Because they’re thinner than other lenses, dailies are widely considered as more comfortable because of their breathability. If you know you’ll need to wear your contacts for a specific interval rather than your whole day, dailies are easy to handle since you can toss them once you are done.

Remember, though, that just because you haven’t worn them an entire day does not mean it’s wise to put them back on after you’ve removed them. Because they are thinner than extended-use lenses, daily lenses are less resistant to the natural germ and grime buildup that can occur in your eyes. Reinserting already worn daily lenses can risk contamination, and that thinner composition means attempting to clean them can result in the lenses breaking down.

Daily lenses can ring up at a higher cost than extended use lenses. Fortunately, they can come in large quantities. This can work in your favor by not needing to resupply for longer stretches than extended-use lenses that are replaced on a monthly or even bi-weekly basis.

Any questions, concerns, or considerations for the best contacts to match your needs can be discussed at length here at Chicago Vision Club. Don’t hesitate to reach out!

Choosing The Right Style of Glasses for You

Choosing the right pair of glasses can be a difficult decision for even the most sartorially inclined individuals. It might seem like a simple enough endeavor, but making the right choice is something that requires some vision (no pun intended). We’ve put together this handy guide for you to provide some direction in choosing a style of glasses that works for you.

The first factor to consider is what kind of look you are going for. For many, the goal is to look stylish and not gauche, practical and not plain. For others campiness or a more spartan look might be exactly what they are looking for. Whatever your personal style might be, it’s important to remember that your glasses are something that you will be wearing most of your waking life, so choosing a style that speaks to you is incredibly important. A good place to start is by modeling your choice after a person whose style you admire, be it Rivers Cuomo, Bowen Yang, or Zooey Deschanel. It’s a great place to start if you are feeling lost!

The other factor that is very important to consider when choosing glasses is your face shape. The general rule of thumb is to choose a style of glasses that contrasts your natural features. If you have an angular face with prominent cheekbones, rounder glasses will soften your face’s angles very nicely. If your face has a rounder shape, a more angular style of frame will accentuate your face’s more subtle curves.

You should also choose glasses that are the appropriate width. Generally speaking, you should choose a frame that is more or less the width of your jawbone, if not just a tiny bit wider. Choosing frames with the appropriate width will give your face a well-defined silhouette.

Once again, these are just some pointers to help you get started on your choice. The most important thing to remember is that these are

glasses and your own opinion matters the most. If you need any more guidance, ask a trusted friend to give their honest opinion, or come talk to the professionals here at Chicago Vision Club. We’ve been doing this for a long time now and are happy to help in any way we can. Give us a call and we will get to work for you!

The Importance of Regular Eye Exams

There is a saying in medicine that, “Prevention is better than cure.” Attributed to a Dutch philosopher named Desiderius Erasmus in the 1500s, this philosophy informs much of how we approach treatment even today.

Regular eye examinations certainly fall into the purview of this saying. While your standard trip to the optometrist usually has to do with prescription eyeglasses and the occasional injury from backyard roughhousing, the truth is that eye exams can reveal a great deal about your personal health.

Your eyes are marvelously complex, full of blood vessels and nerves, and as such your doctor can glean a great deal of information from them. A thorough examination can spot serious conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, as well as eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. It is important to catch these conditions early before they become severely deleterious to your health.

Beyond these serious issues, the strength of your vision is important to ascertain. Contacts and eyeglass prescriptions should be adjusted over time, and getting your vision checked is the only way to make these assessments.

We’ve established the importance of regular eye exams, so that leaves one important question: How often should I get my eyes checked? Well, assuming that you do not have any symptoms of eye disease nor do you need corrective lenses, doctors make frequency recommendations based on age.

For children it is recommended that they get their eyes checked before entering first grade. Unfortunately, many children with vision problems go undiagnosed well into their school years, causing problems in the classroom. Puberty may also cause vision problems, so it is important to have your child’s vision checked every year or two throughout their schooling.

For adults the recommendations are as follows:

- Ages 20-39: Every five years

                - Ages 40-54: Every two to four years

                - Ages 55-64: Every one to three years

                - Ages 65+: Yearly

If you have vision problems or are at risk for eye disease, you should make an individualized plan with your doctor!

We know that eye exams can feel excessive or even scary, but we here at Chicago Vision Club are here to make the process as comfortable and easy as possible. Give us a call today and schedule an appointment for an eye exam, because prevention is always the best medicine.
